Nevio Sarmento, a microbiologist from Timor-Leste (TL) and PhD student at Menzies, leads research on nasopharyngeal bacterial carriage in hospitalized Timorese children. His PhD, funded by Charles Darwin University, develops standardized methods for pneumococcal bacteriology at the National Health Laboratory (NHL) in TL.
As Chief Investigator on the MATCH-TL project, he strengthens infectious disease diagnosis and surveillance in TL. He also leads studies on COVID-19 seroprevalence and vaccine-preventable diseases. Additionally, he chairs the NITAG-TL pneumococcal vaccine sub-committee.
Previously, Sarmento worked at NHL, helping re-establish the microbiology laboratory. He mentored NHL laboratory scientists and served as director for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services at Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares. He provides technical advice to TL's Ministry of Health on health and laboratory system development.
